Finished updating the website

spot

Whew, ok all done.
Took me a couple-few weeks but I got most of website updating done.

Here's what I did:

· Updated the portfolio by adding new stuff, removing older works and combining some things.

· Moved posters to the Illustration section and created 2 sub sections for Illustration.

· Created side menus for Illustration and Design that remain on the page when browsing.

· Made all the sections use thumbnails and created larger thumbnails with more detail.

So that's it, I'm sure theres more, so check it out!

· Admiral Browning Magic Elixir reviews

Photobucket

The reviews for Admiral Browning’s Magic elixir are starting to come in, all positive so far! Heres one at Hellride Music with good things to say about the art:

Hellride Forum

“Before I even touch on the music, I have to comment on how striking the visual presentation is on this disc. Stellar artwork creates an old time feel right from the first glance and when you open it up, there are all sorts of “back in the day” medical jargons and terminologies in the liner notes that only furthers the idea that the sounds contained are truly a remedy for whatever your particular ailment is!”

Another good review HERE.

HellFire Red Rock Art & Photography and Club LSD presents: A Desert Trip featuring super heavy bone crunching rock and rollers Sasquatch at 10 PM and the legendary desert band Yawning Man at 11 PM. Plus a screening of the stoner comedy ‘High Society: A Pot Boiler’ at midnight.

City of Devils blog has a great write up over on their site HERE. Check it out, they are good people.

· Blog and website Update

Last but not least I updated and streamlined the blog by condensing entries, making images smaller, and cutting out some images and words that were overkill. I plan on doing the same to the website soon, should be a task but nothing like creating it. Looking forward to the final results and will post here when done.

'A Desert Trip' Flyer

Here's a flyer for a show Hellfire Red is putting on called 'A Desert Trip' featuring a screening of the movie "High Society: A Pot Boiler" and sets by Yawning Man and Sasquatch. I've been a fan of Yawning Man for a few years now, ever since a friend gave me a bottleg DVD he recorded of one of their sets he caught while on a west coast business trip. I had that recording way before their records and played it contstantly. I did some research for the drawing and tried to make it as good as possible, scanned it then built the border and "eye rays" in Illustrator. After that I imported them into Photoshop and masked them over and around the Octopus. Sometimes I get the urge to do a piece in Black and white before I finished the composition and tones then convert it to color. I did that here, just to get the whole thing together and then switch to color mode. I think that method helps me focus on some projects better than others. I'm still working on my color choices and skills but I think this one worked out well.

The 4 Hour Flyer: Ambition Burning

I did a quick favor for some old friends and made this flyer for them in a bind. Only took 4 hours, over 2 days, between other more involved projects. I drew it then scanned and inverted it, added text and some rays in the eyes from another Illustrator project I was working on. FFX PUNK!

The black background one is a 2 Color job for a black shirt and a sticker and the white one is a 3 Color for a white shirt. I used a few of the elements from the design package. Had to simplify them for the screen printing process and up the contrast plus seperate the colors. I think this one works well as a front label or box label to the Elixir.

Kaemon "The Ballad of Mary Surratt" CD art

OKAY! HERE WE GO!

Got an offer to do a CD cover for my friend Will's band and went for it. I used the same technique as the Admiral Browning Magic Elixir package but it was a little easier as the technique was already set and the drawing was less, more design this time. Had a good time doing it! Here's the finals:

Lets flash back to the beginning shall we?
First I made a mockup of all the elements in Photoshop to make sure it would all work out, fit and look good. You can call it an e-sketch:

Photobucket

After it was good to start I seperated them and printed them out on black (dark grey) paper. Heres what i printed on the black paper:

Then I drew over it with white and scanned that in:

After that I began to clean up and work on the scanned pieces while putting them in place:

I made Black and white versions first but went with green in the end to go with the whole money/faux Masonic theme:

Thats it!

Thanks for lookin'!

Admiral Browning - Magic Elixir Ep Art

So here's the lastest thing I worked on, a digipak design for my friends Admiral Browning. They had the concept and approached me with doing a narative about their "Snidley Whiplash" character selling his snake oil if you will, or Magic Elixir. They had most of the panels already planned out and wanted it to appear like white ink on black paper which was the biggest challenge. After getting the ideas and sketches down I had to go through a few different techniques and approaches before I finally found the one that works and would look good. One I used was drawing over the sketches with a tablet in Photoshop, which didn't work at all.

After we had the right idea I did some rough sketches:

Here's where it got tricky and I spent some time figuring out what to do. Eventually I figured out a technique, here's how it worked out:

I started by drawing and scanning rough sketches or using the original rough sketches and adding tones to them in Photoshop then printing a lighter version of them on black vellum which has a gray tint. After that I drew in the blank areas with white colored pencil. Kind of like a coloring book but adding cross hatching and style. I also had to plan it all out in Photoshop before I drew it so I would know it would fit. Here's the stuff I printed onto the vellum and some of the mock ups I did in PS:

After I drew them on the black vellum i scanned them and assembled them in PS or fixed them. The only one that didn't need any work was Snidley selling to the people, the rest went through alot of changes especially the cover which was taken apart and redone in Photoshop. If you wanna scroll back up and see the difference be my guest.
